L'Arc~en~Ciel (Raruku an Shieru ラルク アン シエル), também conhecida como Laruku (ラルク), é uma popular banda de rock japonesa (ativa desde 1991) que consiste em quatro integrantes. O nome L'Arc en Ciel significa O arco-íris, em francês.
Sobre a banda
Considerada pela Organização Japonesa de Cultura como a maior banda japonesa de todos os tempos em 2007, o L'Arc começou as suas atividades em 1991, com o vocalista Hyde, o guitarrista Hiro, o baixista Tetsu e o baterista Pero, em Osaka. No início o grupo apostava no Visual Kei, estilo de se vestir andrógino e carregado em maquiagem, bastante comum no oriente e inspirado no movimento glam britânico e norte-americano. Outra curiosidade está na grafia em minúsculo no nome de seus integrantes.
Em 1992, o guitarrista Hiro foi substituído por um amigo de Tetsu, Ken. O músico abandonou a faculdade de arquitetura em Nagoya para se dedicar exclusivamente ao L'Arc~en~Ciel. Com a nova formação, a banda teve uma faixa gravada em uma coletânea chamada Gimmick, que ajudou a impulsionar o lançamento do primeiro single, Flood of Tears.
Antes da virada do ano, no dia 30 de dezembro, o L'Arc~en~Ciel sofreu com mais uma baixa: o baterista Pero deixou o grupo depois de um show no Osaka Music Hall. Em busca de um substituto, Tetsu foi até a capital japonesa, Tóquio, buscar Sakura. O primeiro álbum da banda foi lançado em 1993: Dune, alcançou o primeiro lugar de artistas independentes da Oricon, algo como a Billboard japonesa.
Correndo para o sucesso, o quarteto escolheu se mudar para Tóquio e lá ganhou o status de major, em 1994, quando a Sony lançou o álbum Tierra. A grande surpresa para o L'Arc~en~Ciel foi o disco True, de 1996. O CD chegou a vender um milhão de cópias. Trata-se do divisor de águas da carreira da banda. Os álbuns anteriores tinham sido elogiados, já demonstrando a qualidade das composições, mas True conseguiu definir o som da banda, mostrando elementos característicos, novos e surpreendentes.
Em 1997, o baterista Sakura foi preso por porte de droga. Sem um substituto, o L'Arc cancelou o lançamento do single The Fourth Avenue Cafe e, por consequência, a música foi retirada da trilha sonora do anime Samurai X. O novo baterista chamado yukihiro, veio de um grupo chamado Die in Cries e já entrou no L'Arc~en~Ciel gravando um disco ao vivo, Reincarnation 97, Live in Tokyo Dome, de 1997.
Após esse recomeço, a banda foi reconquistando os fãs e fazendo novos álbuns, ganhando prêmios e sendo reconhecida mas mudialmente, com diversos shows em outros países da Ásia. Vieram os álbuns gêmeos: Ark e Ray, sendo lançados ao mesmo tempo, depois o Real em 2000. Depois do Real, a banda entrou em um intervalo de aproximadamente 2 anos.
Durante esse período os intregrantes trabalharam em suas carreiras solos: Hyde (Hyde[ist]), Ken (Sons of All Pussys), Tetsu (Tetsu69) e Yukihiro (Acid Android). Em 2003 para celebrar seu retorno, foram feitos 7 shows em shibuya, e durante os shows, foi anunciando o retorno definitivo: o álbum Smile.
Então em 2004, eles retornam com o álbum Smile. Com músicas mais ocidentalizadas e algumas letras em inglês, acabam por estourar mais uma vez na mídia e reconquistar todos os fãs, muito devido à canção Ready Steady Go, que fez parte da abertura do animê Full Metal Alchemist. Fazem a Smile Tour por todo o Japão, e um show inédito nos Estados Unidos ainda nesta turnê.
Em 2005, lançam o álbum Awake, inovando mais uma vez e seguindo um pouco da linha do seu antecessor. A turnê percorre todo o páis do sol nascente e a banda até faz shows pela Ásia. Awake torna-se um dos álbuns favoritos dos fãs da banda, devido à qualidade impecável de todas as canções.
Em 2006, a banda deu um breve pausa, dando prioridade para os projetos solos. Em abril desse mesmo ano, lançaram o DVD Asia live 2005. Para comemorar o aniverssário de 15 anos da banda, organizaram o mini-evento: L'Arcafe, neste evento exibiram vídeos inéditos além da venda de produtos. Os membros organizaram um cardápio especial super criativo, os nomes das bebidas eram parte de alguns títulos de música (Feeling Fine, Dive to Blue, Ready Steady Go,…) e quatro pratos diferentes (hyde plate, ken plate, tetsu plate, yukihiro plate). Além do evento, a banda fez o relançamento de 15 singles: de Blurry Eyes até Forbidden Lover, incluindo o single the fourth avenue cafe. Em novembro, a banda surpreendeu os fãs com um show em comemoração do aniverssário: L'Arc~en~Ciel 15th L'Anniversary no Tokyo Dome. Em dezembro, os álbuns Ark e Ray foram relançados numa edição limitada (CD+DVD) de anverssário cujos DVDs contém o mesmo material exibido no L'Arcafe.
Em 2007, mais produtos fora lançados. Ainda em fevereiro, foi lançado o DVD CHRONICLE 0-ZERO-. Em março, a banda fez sua primeira apresentação na TV, durante o programa do POP JAM.
A banda já teve diversas participações em animes: "The Fourth Avenue Cafe" foi usada como canção de encerramento de Rurouni Kenshin; "Blurry Eyes" como a abertura de DNA²; 虹 (Niji) como a música tema do filme de Rurouni Kenshin; "READY STEADY GO", como a segunda abertura de Full Metal Alchemist, "Driver's High" como primeira abertura de GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka) e "DAYBREAK'S BELL" como primeira abertura de Gundam 00, "Shine" como abertura do anime Seirei no Moribito, "Link" como abertura e Lost Heaven como encerramento de FullMetal Alchemist: Conquistadores de Shambala.
